Wedding Cliches: It's Okay to Leave These Out

Thursday, October 13, 2011

When it’s time for that fairy tale wedding, many brides adopt traditions that have long been considered obligatory. You know those traditions, they usually result in awkward family memories and averted eyes. But fear not, we’ve singled out the ones that could use some rethinking. Keep in mind that some wedding traditions are unavoidable, such as drunken groomsmen dancing doing the chicken dance.

1.) The bouquet toss
It may seem like a sweet, harmless tradition that involves hopeful brides-to-be competing for the next shot at the altar. However, it usually ends up an awkward display of women who probably don’t want their “singleness” highlighted. Give us chronically single gals a break and let us avoid getting punched in the face over some flowers.

2.) Garter removal
This really doesn’t need a lot of explanation. Do you really want your family to witness your husband searching under your dress for a piece of lingerie? Brides tend to look uncomfortable throughout the whole process, and who really wants to catch that?

3.) Video montages
This is a somewhat new tradition, but it often comes off a little cheesy. A montage of dorky teen photos set to a Whitney Houston song just doesn’t do justice in representing a relationship.

4.) Matching Bridesmaids dresses
One size just doesn’t fit all when it comes to formal gowns. Your bridesmaids are a unique group of people with different styles and figures. Try giving them a color to work with and let them pick their own dresses. They’ll be thankful you gave them the options!

Keep in mind, it’s your wedding, and you get to follow the traditions you want. If you think something needs rethinking, nothing is set in stone. No wedding ritual is to dramatic or time honored to change up. Make your big day unique to you!
